CLINICAL EMPATHY

Unlike sympathy, which is defined as feeling sorry for another person, empathy is an ability to stand in another person’s shoes and  to understand his situation. Not only our private relationships but also professional conversations require more empathy than sympathy inasmuch as feeling sorry for others does not help them. Especially, in hospitals and in doctor-patient relationships, clinical empathy is essential because in this way, doctors desire to help patients. Additionally, empathy is necessary to establish trust; it is also the foundation of a good doctor-patient relationship. Sometimes, doctors can affect patients’ life innocuously but unfortunately, they can also influence their lives deeply and badly in a serious situation without empathy. So, being a good doctor requires understanding patients; it is not just about science. For these reasons, learning and using empathy is very important for patients’ and doctors’ lives.

First of all, doctors affect a lot of important situations in patients’ lives both with their treatment and behaviour. Moreover, as long as a patient feels his doctor’s support, he will come around easily; even if the patient’s disease is fatal, and these supportive attitudes decrease the patients’ depression. It is assumed that doctors’ answers should include more information to alleviate patients' distress but contrary to common belief, these approaches just distress them because bombarding patients with information does not alleviate their anxiety. Creating worries for patients is one of the major shortcomings of bombarding them with information. If patients understand the situation  better, they will come around quickly. In some cases, both patients and their families are affected by doctors’ attitudes deeply because these families are already worried about patients’ health and they need doctors to show empathy, hence doctors’ attitudes are very important.

Everything which affects patients’ life, also influences doctors’ life, being a good doctor requires good relationships with  patients; furthermore, studies have linked empathy to greater patient satisfaction, better outcomes and decreased physician burnout. We can clearly infer the importance of empathy in this research. Considering the importance of understanding patients provides compassionate care, and empathy also helps establish stronger bonds between doctors and patients. Additionally giving importance to patients’ life stories alters doctors’ attitudes towards  them. Some doctors cannot empathize, that’s why; all  doctors should take courses about empathy. To exemplify these courses’ contents; most of the courses are focused on improving doctors’ listening skills and ability to decode facial expressions and body language; some programs also use actors as patients in order to  simulate these relationships. Some courses are explicitly prescriptive; make eye contact with patient, pay attention to the tone of voice, etc. whether doctors can empathize or not, they should attend these kinds of courses to learn to empathize in  the right  way.

In brief, empathy is the basic bond in the doctor-patient relationship; therefore, doctors should give importance to empathy and should take empathy courses. Empathy makes patients’ happier and it helps them to come around easily, so doctors become more successful in their career. Without empathy, life is not comfortable either for the patient or for the doctors.

CAUSES OF SHYNESS

Shyness means acting awkwardly and feeling uncomfortable when there are people around a person. These kinds of people are known as shy. Usually, they don’t want to be in a crowd or don’t like parties where a lot of people are involved. .There are several factors that cause shyness in people.

First of all, genetic factors may cause shyness. Children who have shy parents in their family are more likely to be shy when they grow up. Due to the fact that communication skills are genetically inherited, people may automatically have weak communication skills, which leads to shyness. Moreover, genes shape the brain’s features such as its anxiety.  Anxious brains trigger shyness  and it can be said that socially  anxious brains are inherited  . So parents’ genes may affect their children’s social traits indirectly.

Another cause of shyness is the environment. Schools, neighborhoods and circles of friends are places where people show their interpersonal skills. People around the subject talk or comment about him either negatively  or positively. These comments shape the subject’s behavior either adversely or positively. For example, a person who is afraid of   what people will say about his behavior, may shape his attributes according to others’ opinion in order not to be rejected or humiliated by others. Therefore, he prefers not to express himself instead of saying what he wants to say or act how he wants; this is known as shyness.

One additional reason why some people are shy is the effects of their upbringing  and their families’ attitudes. To begin with, according to research, children who didn’t get enough love or feedback from their family  tend to act shyly . In such families parents don’t express their feelings to their child and there is a cold family environment. Because of this  kind  of behavior, children feel alone and they will never be able to develop the ability to socialize  with other people. Additionally, violence in the family environment may affect the child. For example, if parents  are aggressive, the child will eventually perceive other people as potentially hostile. How can it be expected for  such a child to develop a friendly attitude to others?

To conclude, shyness is triggered by many factors such as genetic factors, environmental factors and familial factors. Shyness is hard to cure although it can be cured. However, as Steven Hawking said quiet people have the loudest minds so; I think people should be a little shy because it is necessary for their social adaptation.

CAUSES OF DIVORCE

According to almost every society, marriage can be regarded as sacred and thus, starting a family is one of the most significant steps in life . Apart from maintaining the tradition, many people prefer to get married and spend their lives together due to their mutual love and respect. As nothing can exist forever, some of the pairs have a tendency to part ways owing to a myriad daily problems. Although some of them break up with each other consciously, the majority of them are more likely to be obsessed with less serious faults and to call their relationships off without batting an eye, which can be considered a shame. .

One major reason for divorce, and also a very common one, is a lack of communication. As far as recent family relationships becoming further removed  from traditional values are concerned, it can be easily asserted that most people have more of a tendency not to care about each other and to live alone together as  strangers. As many people devote themselves to achieving  a career or to getting a promotion, to put it another way, as people consider financial success to be more important, they become alienated from their family. Most people do not even know their partners very well not because of personal characteristics, but misjudgment. Indeed, not knowing or being sure about the necessary responsibilities of marriage or getting married to someone without knowing him/her completely  causes people’s marriage to suffer .

When it comes to financial issues, many people prefer to provide for themselves rather than being in need of help . Without any doubt, to today’s people, money is the one thing to make people  comfortable and a slight financial problem in marriage may easily lead to divorce. Although such a situation demonstrates the weakness of the relationship , it gives  rise to financial independence and self-confidence . Equally important, in contrast to the past, thanks to changes in women’s roles in the society, most women have a right to make decisions and do whatever they want independently. Aside from financial problems, in case of marital difficulties ranging from domestic violence to physical or emotional abuse, women are capable of  leaving their husbands without any restriction.

All things considered, couples may decide to divorce as they decide to dedicate their lives to their partners in the modern world. As for a host of problems including the lack of interest and financial problems, it is not an exaggeration to say that the welfare level in developing countries and the level of importance  people give to marital difficulties are of prime importance when  promoting  community relations.
