In the modern world, travel has become easier thanks to
globalization. There are planes flying everywhere in the world and trains and
ships going to other places. Travel speed has also increased making it possible
to go abroad for a weekend. With all these opportunities, more people want to
travel more frequently and see the world. This being so, visa free travel was
greeted with delight. Yet is visa free travel all it is cracked up to be? The
answer is no: visa free travel has both advantages and disadvantages.
Visa free travel has some undeniable upsides. First of all,
it provides cultural integration by bringing people from different parts of the
world together. For instance, people of Turkey get to rub shoulders with the
Japanese or the Koreans. This increases mutual understanding and tolerance as
people realize that humans are pretty much the same the world over. By making
it easier for people to travel, visa free travel contributes to world peace; after
all, you don’t you don’t fight your friends. In short, visa free travel brings
people together and thus, increases cultural interaction, cultural sensitivity
and understanding.
Visa free travel also has disadvantages. First of all, it is
hard to determine who exactly is entering the country. It could be artists and
scientists but it could also be criminals and terrorists. The latter could
endanger local people. There are many examples to this and such people have
been sent back to their countries after a lot of trouble. Secondly, people who
come as tourists may prefer to stay on and settle. If they do this, they
compete for jobs with locals. If they are working illegally, they demand lower
wages, which causes a reaction in the host population. In sort, visa free
travel could lead to the arrival of undesirables and thus cause social
problems.
In conclusion, visa free travel certainly makes sense for
businessmen but is questionable for the average tourist. Each country makes its
own decision based on its individual circumstances. Some countries like the
those in the EU allow it while others like the UK and the US do not.
