Nuclear energy has always been both a controversial and a
topical issue throughout the 21st century. Today, 31 countries in the world are
using this power to meet their demands for energy in spite of its harms and the
risk of accident. Now, is it Turkey’s turn? Turkey is not one of the 31
countries which have nuclear energy; nevertheless, the Turkish government is so
eager to build a new nuclear plant that it has already initiated laws about
nuclear power; however, will this development be good for Turkey? Even though
there are a host of detrimental effects of nuclear power, authorities cannot
reach an ultimate conclusion concerning nuclear energy. As far as I am
concerned, it will be suicide if nuclear plants are constructed in Turkey .
Supporters
of “no to nuclear” maintain that nuclear accidents are catastrophic and
countries should take the risks and impacts of accidents into consideration. In
case of an accident during the long sea voyage to Russia, the fishing industry
will end and most people will be exposed to economic risk. The risk of accident
is part and parcel of nuclear power and it will continue to be. Thus, there is
only one way to prevent nuclear disasters: do not build nuclear power plants.
Proponents
of ”no to nuclear” claim that nuclear plants may create genetic mutations and
cancer in the case of exposure. To illustrate, the Fukushima nuclear power
plant has been releasing radioactive waste since 2011. For this reason,
mutations can be seen in butterflies in Japan. This pollution does not affect
only butterflies but also citizens that have been diagnosed with cancer. In
short, while the government’s bottom line is the liras, people’s bottom line is
their health.
However,
opponents of “no to nuclear” assert that nuclear plants may meet Turkey’s
soaring energy needs and this situation may trigger rapid economic growth. Even
children laugh at this argument since the Akkuyu-Mersin nuclear plant which is
being built will not work strictly for Turkey’s economy. This nuclear plant
will work for Russians and if the nuclear plant begins to run, Russia will
benefit from this more than Turkey .
In
conclusion, based on the aforesaid ideas, there have been many moot points that
have turned individuals against others concerning nuclear power. After seeing
these pieces of evidence, I strongly believe that nuclear plants are murderers
of nature. Therefore, the government should withdraw its decision about nuclear
power plants urgently.
