War is one of the
main problems in human history. Billions of people have died due to several
wars and conflicts among governments, countries and alliances for thousands of
years.Especially the last
centuryis the most unfortunate century for all people on earth because several
million people suffered from terrible wars which spread all around the world.
The biggest wars of history in terms of their casualties and consequences, WW-I
and WW-II, occurred in the
first half of the century. After WW-II, stability and peace could not be
established and humanity was threatened during many dangerous crises such as
the Cuban Missile Crisis. Nowadays, a lot of conflicts are continuing in many
regions of the world. But there has not been a big war which has led to several hundreds of deaths
and casualties and impacted
people. In our modern world, there are some theories and predictions about possible world wars. In
my opinion, the possibility of World War III is very unrealistic.
Firstly, since the
end of WW-II, almost every super power has acquied atomic and nuclear weapons.
It may sound like it can cause very dangerous wars yet this situation has established
stability among superpowers due to the fact that a
probable nuclear war will be the end of the world. None of those powerful
governments would dare to give rise to a nuclear war. Of course, there have
been cold wars, but there have been no wars because people are afraid. For
example, in the Cuban
Missile Crisis, the US government and the Soviet government were very hostile
to each other. There could have been a nuclear war and as I said, it probably
would have been the end of the world but both governments understood the
importance and, possible and terrible consequences of the situation.
There are also other choices to
prevent WW-III. Many international institutions are active and very powerful in world policy. Due to
the power and sanctions of these foundations, many hostilities between
countries can be overcome without war.For instance, the UN is the most powerful
institution that makes all governments negotiate and have diplomatic relations with other countries
instead of solving problems through wars.
Some analysts,
journalists and politicians assert that there is the possibility of a world war
because of increasing
political crises all over the world and competition among countries and
especially superpowers. There have been political crises, hostilities and competitions among
countries throughout history. This is not a realistic reason for the
possibility of WW-III. As already explained,
nuclear weapons and the probable consequences of using these weapons frighten people. In addition,
international institutions such as the U.N have a great impact on world politicsand
this also makes a global war difficult.
In conclusion,
governments competed and fought with each other. There are several tragedies in
which millions of people suffered. But nowadays, almost all superpowers have
thousands of nuclear weapons and we have many international institutions that
aim to deal with problems among countries by means of peaceful
solutions, thus the possibility of a prospective world war is not very high.
