Most individuals may have bad thoughts in daily life from
time to time; however, there are people who make a habit of thinking bad
thoughts in society as well. They are called pessimistic. Those who are
pessimistic cannot acquire « the glass half full » attitude. Thus, they always
complain about something. This attitude has a host of effects on them such as
depression, low self-esteem and failure in life; nevertheless, that is not the
whole story, their attitudes can also impact their surroundings such as
parents, friends, teachers. Apart from the effects of unhappiness, there are
several reasons for unhappiness. Such causes include the fear of failure and
making mistakes, negative rumination about the past and self defeating talk.
The first reason for unhappiness is the fear of failure and making mistakes. This problem is particularly prevalent among primary school students due to strict teachers and sarcasm in the classroom. In this way, most people are prone to be perfectionist. Perfectionists may think that they are not good enough to be successful in life. Thus, they may feel the pressure of responsibility; nonetheless, they do not realize that they prevent success.
Another cause of unhappiness is negative rumination about the past. According to some psychologists, forgetting one memory, which is unimportant, can take 10-15 years. Thus, most unhappy people cannot shape their future easily because of thinking about the past. As such, they do not have the opportunity to become aware of their potential and this situation may pave the way for failure and unhappiness.
The last cause is self-defeating talk which reduces people’ s confidence. To clarify, this type of talk consists of some statements such as I am not good enough or I am going to fail and so forth. Actually, when someone says that you cannot succeed, most people keep away from this bad friend; however, they can say such things to themselves. Even if they do not have a complaint about this situation, this factor affects them deeply.
In conclusion, unhappiness is one of the most serious psychological challenges in these modern times. Today, most people suffer from depression and depend on antidepressants. When the significance of the problem is considered, it seems that people should do something immediately so as to get rid of this crisis.
